Technology Tips for Seniors

Technology has taken over nearly every aspect of our lives. From smartphones and video chat apps to digital games and e-books, technology has changed how we communicate and stay entertained. Embracing these changes can be challenging and even frustrating at times.

However, it can also make it easier to stay in touch with loved ones and provide new ways to engage with the world. Explore these technology tips to enhance digital skills.

Use YouTube as a Resource

YouTube is an online video-sharing platform where anyone with an account can upload videos on a wide range of topics, including pop culture, news, sports and fashion. It's also a great resource for finding tutorials and informational videos to learn new skills. Search for educational how-tos on navigating your phone, computer or tablet.

Additionally, you may be able to find videos exploring how to use specific apps or digital resources, including video chat, medical alert technology and social media platforms. These videos serve as quick, easy-to-follow methods of learning technology independently. At WindsorMeade, seniors also have access to hands-on technology training with resident experts.

Check Out Training Classes at Local Senior Centers

Many senior centers offer technology training courses to help older adults stay informed about shifting digital trends and devices. Check the events schedule at your local senior center to see what they offer. Public libraries often offer technology training classes as well.

WindsorMeade features a resident library, where residents can access computers to search for local or online technology courses. We also provide transportation to planned events or appointments and can help residents make it to a class. Consider taking a class with friends at your local senior center - these offer another way to socialize and you’ll have people to discuss topics with outside of class. At WindsorMeade, we offer classes tailored to helping seniors get to know the capabilities of technology and assisting them in becoming familiar with the equipment.

Be Patient With Yourself

Learning a new skill isn't always easy. If it takes you a few tries to place a video call or successfully download a new app, be patient with yourself and remember that everyone learns at a different pace. Consider seeking out additional resources, including books or instructional guides on technology basics, that offer step-by-step directions with images or diagrams to better grasp the subject.

If you become overwhelmed with the task or frustrated with yourself for not getting it, take a break. Go for a walk around your neighborhood, run an errand or stop by the bistro cafe for a comforting snack. You may feel more confident and motivated after stepping away to reset.

Ask Questions

Don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck on a technological task. If it's for a training class, ask the instructor for guidance or clarification via email or during your next session. Reaching out to a family member, especially one who can visit in-person, can also help. Most older grandchildren can be super tech-savvy! They can show you the ins and outs of whatever digital device you're trying to master. This also provides an opportunity to bond with your loved one.

At WindsorMeade, residents can also turn to a resident technology expert or team member for assistance. Our team members prioritize relationship-building with residents and are always available to answer your questions or provide support.

Take It Slow

Learning how to successfully navigate technology may take some time, and that's okay. Work on a task until you feel confident you know what you're doing before moving on to the next one. There's no set timeline on how long it should take you to grasp a topic.

Consider establishing a time each day when you practice your technological skills. This can help you avoid feeling rushed or overworked. If you start getting tired or finding it difficult to concentrate, stop for the moment and return to the task when you're feeling refreshed. You can also break a task into smaller steps and work on mastering one portion at a time to prevent feeling overwhelmed or frustrated.
